The Gall of it All

The Yin Yoga Channel

It was a dark and stormy night...it was and we were focused on broadening our boundaries in this Liver and Gall Bladder focused session. Physically we were working the inner and outer legs and the sides of the body.

For this session you should have two blocks and a blanket. Extra pillows are good too as we set up a side stretch that requires some firm support like a bolster or firm pillows.

The playlist for this class is contained in "Busy, Too Busy". Here is the link to the playlist in Spotify:  https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4DwrSsrUcJaovcLNOssx6C?si=h9sO96yMSRGPP6H3pSUIyg

We begin with the track called Temple of Silence

Not Minding Anything - Equanimity

The Yin Yoga Channel

This session asks you to cultivate a sense of equanimity...not minding anything. In that practice it's important to understand that being open does not mean condoning or agreeing necessarily. It means can we take it all in before we jump to conclusions or rush to judgment?  Things arise so quickly and in just a split second we are tossed out of equanimity. That happens because we are human, but the practice is to come back to that sense of openness as soon as we feel clenched, clamped and shut.  This practice physically stretches and compresses the front body (and the back body reciprocates).

For this practice have a blanket and a couple of blocks. You may want extra cushioning, so grab a few pillows or a bolster.

If you would like some grounding, earthy music for your practice, the Spotify playlist is called: Aware. Here is the link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6AinkIbENoJusLyHBNoTT0?si=M31EpCRlTGWago8GNyw7mw

Yin For the Kidneys and Urinary Bladder Energy

The Yin Yoga Channel

This session pays attention to the back body through passive forward folds, back bends and twists. The Kidney and Urinary Bladder energy is the flip side of the Stomach and Spleen energy, so we are still working the Stomach and Spleen energy by default. The Kidneys rule the waters fo the body, the legs and the low back - to let these aspects be central in your focus in this practice.

For this practice have a blanket and a couple of blocks. You may want extra cushioning, so grab a few pillows or a bolster.

If you would like some grounding, earthy music for your practice, the Spotify playlist is called: Zen Spirit. Here is the link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7u1Yj72kNNUGmxiZtg9CII?si=G98LP1KiR7OR_qZORunXUQ

Stomach and Spleen - Late Summer

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this session we are working on balancing the energy of Late Summer - The Stomach and the Spleen. When balanced, this energy nourishes and nurtures us. We have a sense of satisfaction and contentment in where we are and that life is fueling us. When out of balance, we feel like we've been ingesting toxicity and are uprooted with anxiety. This year has been toxic in so many ways, however, if we can ground ourselves, we can be fueled by this experience. This energy is nurtured by stretching, twisting and compressing the front body. The back body goes along by default, but we will favor the front body for this practice (we won't disregard the experience of the back body).

For this practice have a blanket and a couple of blocks. You may want extra cushioning, so grab a few pillows or a bolster.

If you would like some grounding, earthy music for your practice, the Spotify playlist is called: Earthy Grounding. Here is the link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2S8ioXC4UlTj9iSNl3VZf3?si=4bkE8C3jTKq20JswB33sCw

Yin for The Courage To Let Go (Of the Yellow Ipod)

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this session we are working the energy of the Lungs. The Lungs house Courage (to be present in our lives). When we are out of balance with this energy, we accumulate grief. Attachments cause suffering and grief because everything is impermanent.  For this practice, you will need a blanket, block and a bolster or some cushions to provide some firm support.

Getting Yin to The Back

The Yin Yoga Channel

This session takes us into every side of the spine for a spinal balance and reset. In search of "perfect" as defined by the feeling of balance, enough or 'santosha' - contentment.  For this practice it is good to have a bolster or cushions, a blanket and a block.

Resting in the Bones

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this session we find the density of the bones and let the muscles, ligaments and tendons rest. In this state of rest we willingly release the tension that we carry daily. Thich Nhat Hanh shares that in nature, animals know to rest in order to heal. Resting brings a stillness and a willingness to be still in the intention to do something good for ourselves.  Props needed for this practice include blocks, a blanket and something that serves the purpose of a bolster (cushions, additional blankets, or pillows can do the job).  Give yourself permission to rest in this practice and emerge on the other side of this practice refreshed from the heat of summer and the stress of the pandemic.

Yin Yoga - The Kidneys and Spiritual Hope

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this Yin session, the focus is on the Kidneys and the back body - especially for those with back pain.  As we let go of tension and fear in the body, we leave ourselves open to hope. Hope comes in different modes - Egoic hope attaches to a specific outcome - "I hope they have Fire Cheetos at the store." It sets us up with an expectation that if that hope is not met, we will be disappointed.  Spiritual Hope is open to the unfolding of events as they will unfold with the understanding that everything is as it should be and that even though it may not be pleasant or at the top of our list of desires, there is something of value contained in the moment.  The Kidneys are all about wisdom. Everything we do is contributing to the wisdom bank of the kidneys.  We get the most wisdom out of the unexpected moments.  For this session, we will let the moments unfold in each pose. Props: mat, blanket, blocks. Also great to have extra cushions around just in case you need more support in poses to control the level of sensation.

Yin- Stomach & Spleen - Nourish

The Yin Yoga Channel

Focusing on the Stomach and Spleen means getting into the front body. We do that with passive stretches that increase and huggy forward folds that embrace your energy for digesting life.  For this practice you will need a blanket and a couple of blocks.

Yin - Lots of Shorter Holds in the Hips

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this session we explore lots of shorter holds (about 2-3 minutes rather than 5) to get into the hips from different angles. The hips are a gateway of energy flowing vertically in the body, so a good hip session can do you a lot of good!  For this session you will need a blanket and a couple of blocks. A bolster is great for final relaxation to let your hips absorb all this great rebalancing.

Yin Yoga - Breathing Into The Bones

The Yin Yoga Channel

Yin Yoga is yoga for the bones. In this session we will focus on the density and weight of the bones in order to direct energy there. As they say, where your mind goes, so goes your energy. You will find this practice deeply relaxing. To support you in this practice, good to have a blanket, a couple of blocks and a bolster nearby.

Yin Yoga - My Heart Sees Your Heart

The Yin Yoga Channel

This yin class helps us get into the energy of the season - Summer - Fire and the Heart's energy. This practice will point you in the direction of the house of your spirit - the home of peace, harmony and joy -  your heart. These heart opening and introspective poses will ready you for the weeks ahead.  You need a yoga mat, a blanket and a block for this practice.

Pause & Soften - Supported Seated Forward Fold

The Yin Yoga Channel

15 minutes...GO ...gather all the pillows and cushions around you. Bring them to your mat and prepare to pause and soften into a place of deep relaxation and gentle, supported stretch. Great way to start or end your day and you can do it anywhere in your home...and dogs love it too.  Mat is recommended even though I opted to just be on the floor. Enjoy!

Yin Yoga - Soothing the Kidneys

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this express Yin session, we are dedicating our attention to the Kidneys and our inherent energy.  With all the stress in the world right now, we are taxing our energy navigating our life's pathway. This takes its toll on our Kidneys and they deserve a recharge and some soothing.  Kidneys also house our wisdom, and we sure do need that right now. Turn off your phone and TV. Shut the door and relax.  You need a yoga mat, a blanket and a block for this practice.

Yin Yoga: Inner: Outer Hips (Express)

The Yin Yoga Channel

This Yin session focuses on the energy that flows in the inner and outer legs/hips. The Liver and the Gall Bladder energy is all about opening ourselves to compassion.  If compassion is difficult to connect with, you can start with gratitude for what is present right now and the lessons and insights it affords us.  All you have to do is be present with it.  Patience will take you a long way in this practice.  You will need a mat, a blanket/beach towel, and a block for this practice.

Yin Yoga - Stress Changes Us

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this session of Yin Yoga, we explore change that comes from pressure and stress. Everything changes and when there is stress and pressure, things undoubtedly change. This is an opportunity to explore what changes you have been feeling in the past weeks and how you will be different because of that stress and pressure. What have you learned and how will it make you different moving forward? This stress can be therapeutic - helping us move in the direction the universe is nudging us.  Lots of deep hip work in this session. Best to have a mat, blanket and block for this session. Dogs/Cats are optional. Buddy makes an appearance and shares an OM at the end.

Yin Yoga & Deep Stretch Combo - Deep Hip Release

The Yin Yoga Channel

This is a mix of Yin and Yang styles of deep stretches for the hips. Settling in and letting go of tension in a yin way, and then moving compassionately and mindfully into more activated stretches. For this practice you will need a mat, a blanket, a block and a strap/belt/tie/scarf. Enjoy!

Yin for the Kidneys and Truth

The Yin Yoga Channel

Working the Kidneys' energy means we are cultivating a path to our own innate wisdom. When we are wise, we know that the truth is only present in this split second. Beyond that, the stories begin.  The practice here is to stay present and recognize when the stories take you away. Seek the truth and make decisions based on that.  For this practice you will need a mat, a couple blankets or beach towels, and some pillows for extra comfort.

Yin Stomach and Spleen practice

The Yin Yoga Channel

This Yin class addresses the energy of the Stomach/Spleen channel of energy in the body. When this channel is disrupted, Anxiety has the upper hand and when balanced, we experience equanimity and calm. It also helps us feel at home in our bodies, homes and lives, no matter what else is going on around us.  Think of this as a class to nourish yourself on all levels. Enjoy!

I shared this poem in this class:

It is enough right now

to taste one moment of

peace. Of course I want

more, but at least the

door is open.

It is enough to draw a

conscious breath and

let my hands relax,

fingers releasing their

tight grasp on things

outside of my control.

It is enough to shed a

layer of stress as if

taking off a jacket or a

pair of too tight shoes.

Ease of being has to

start somewhere.

This breath is my

first step.

Yin Yoga - The Art of Doing Nothing

The Yin Yoga Channel

To be Yin, we have to let go of doing and just let ourselves BE. It sounds easy, however, there is an art of doing nothing. Today's practice is letting go as we find ourselves gripping, holding, managing and bracing. Can we just be in what is here right now? For this practice you will need a blanket, a couple of blocks and cushions/pillows to support your just being.

Yin - Heart and Lungs

The Yin Yoga Channel

In this session, we are focusing on the energy of the Heart and Lungs. The heart's energy is a path into our personal sense of our spirit. It leads and connects us to our higher self where we all connect in the collective consciousness. The Lung's energy is Courage. It gives us the ability to stand in the moment we are in and take in the reverence of this precious, unique moment. For this practice you will need a yoga mat, a block, a blanket and possibly a wall. Maybe have a Labrador retriever. Warning: the role of annoying thoughts that nag us is be played by Sadie.
