Mindfulness Meditation - Finding Stability

The Meditation

Channel

In this session we are sitting mindfully, using the breath and awareness of this present moment as anchors of stability.

A recent, long bout of vertigo forced me to be present and find the anchors of my stability. I had to immediately let go of stories and predictions and attend to my connection to the ground and my breath. I had to watch the conditions of the 'whirl of my mind' and be open to the shift and settling because getting caught up in the whirl was sure to knock me over.

It's better now, but it left me interested in the moment we get caught up in the swirl and the replacement of my mind on what is present - breath and connection to the floor, chair, cushion - whatever is my foundation in the moment. Practicing the replacement of the awareness here is valuable work.

Shamatha Meditation - Conditional Thinking

The Meditation

Channel

In this session, we address conditional thinking and how it pops up in meditation and in life off the cushion. By putting conditions on experiences and circumstances, we are sending ourselves the message that this moment or ourselves are not good enough as we are. While some conditions may serve us as motivation, others harm us and cause suffering. "If I take a moment to go to the bathroom before meditating, I'll suffer less."  "If I get this thing done, I'll have the rest of the day to do what I want."  "If I lose 10lbs before my birthday, I'll have a great year next year."  "If I do the really hard workout, I'll deserve the raspberry tart in the fridge."  "If the sun comes out today, it will be a good day."

The way to sit with this conditional thinking it to start with open awareness and then non-judgmental observations and compassion. As we practice this we notice a softening into the present moment. It is enough and so are we. Just meditate. Just be. This moment is good enough.

So what are you waiting for? Let's meditate! The conditions will never be better than right now.

Brand New Day Meditation

The Meditation

In this morning meditation we allow each moment to unfold as it will. We tune into the newness of each layer of our being and our surroundings.  For this meditation, find a comfortable way to sit: On a chair at the front edge with feet on the ground or sitting on the floor with the hips slightly more elevated than the knees.  It's nice to sit near a window and take in the sounds outside as well as inside.  Enjoy!

Hourglass Meditation

"Like the sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives."  Yep that's where we are today in this meditation. Sometimes life feels like it's heaped on top of us.
